Making things easier for the caterers
Local guests stay away from the fan zones and fan miles in Klagenfurt – a problem for caterers and shop-keepers. But now help is on its way.
After some of the sales stalls even had to close, the municipality of Klagenfurt has taken action and decided on a relief package for landlords that was presented by Mayor Harald Scheucher and Governor Jörg Haider on Tuesday at the HCMC.
The official regulation banning the use of drinking glasses, glass bottles, china, etc. will be lifted when the group matches are over. As from 17 June, innkeepers in the city centre will be allowed to use their standard plates again and serve beer in glasses. “We have to come back to normal conditions”, said Mayor Scheucher. The Fan Zone on the Exhibition Grounds will be closed on 16 June, the rest of the scheduled concerts will be held in Neuer Platz. In addition, sales stall operators will be offered financial relief. The Mayor: “No rent will be charged for the market huts, and the stall rent will be reduced by half.” The last in the series of relief measures is the lift of the traffic regulation that was specifically decreed for the EURO, as of 18 June. Scheucher appealed to the citizens of his city to finally join in the unique celebration of football and enjoy the atmosphere that Klagenfurt will most probably never be able to experience again. At the end of the presentation, Scheucher confirmed that the call centre has not recorded a single call reporting property damage.
According to Jörg Haider, Klagenfurt has achieved all the objectives that the city has set itself. “Thanks to the perfect traffic concept, there was no chaos in the streets; the safety and security concept worked perfectly, despite the negative predictions; and the match between Poland and Germany – that had been said to be a high risk factor – ended without a single person injured.”
