City football party in the afternoon
That's what we call a football party! Klagenfurt's city centre was turned into a colourful sea of flags on Sunday in the late afternoon before the match between Poland and Germany. 20,000 to 25,000 fans came to the city to party. Before the real match, there were table football encounters between the two nations, and in the evening the various groups of fans parted with hand-shakes. In Waidmannsdorf there were no problems whatsoever, the visitors marched towards the stadium without causing any trouble. Austrian TV and the German media showed beautiful pictures of German and Polish fans having a great time together at Klagenfurt's football party. The Traffic did not pose any problems either. At 6:00 pm, there were still enough parking spaces around the stadium for ticket holders. And maybe the people of Klagenfurt will now finally get into the mood and join in this celebration of football. The needless fear-mongering in the Austrian media before the European Football Championship was totally exaggerated and unnecessary. The team of the Organising Committee appealed to the people of Klagenfurt "not to hide any longer", but to join the fans from all the various country to enjoy a great Championship.
There were some riots in the evening, but the police soon had them under control.
