The European Football Championship is the third largest sports event in the world (numbers one and two are the Football World Cup and the Olympic Summer Games); it is organised by the United Football Association or UEFA in short.
UEFA EURO 2008TM will be held in Austria and Switzerland. From June 7 to 29, the best European teams will fight for the prestigious title of European Football Champion. There will be 31 games in eight state-of-the-art stadiums. In addition to Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna, Klagenfurt is the fourth, proud host city in Austria. The host cities in Switzerland are Zurich, Geneva, Bern and Basel.
The opening match will be played in Basel, the final in Vienna.
The sheer size of this tournament is illustrated by some facts and figures: Each of the 31 matches will be watched by about 150 million (!) people world-wide on TV; the expected figures are: more than 7 billion TV viewers and more than 25 million Internet users. Austria expects 7,000 media representatives from 100 countries to pour into the country.
Athletic aspects
The two hosts, Austria and Switzerland, have qualified automatically for the Championships. The other national teams from Europe competed in seven groups for participation. The last qualification matches were held on 21 November 2007. The seven group winners and the seven runners-up qualified for the finals of the European Football Championships.
