The Lindworm
The Lindworm is the emblem and the heraldic animal of Klagenfurt. The oldest official city seal dating from the year 1287 already showed this winged dragon.
The Lindworm, hewn from slate and set up over 400 years ago, stands in the heart of Klagenfurt on Neuer Platz in front of the City Hall and it is probably one of the most frequently photographed subjects of the city.
City Hall
The City Hall on Neuer Platz square was formerly called Rosenberg Palace and has been the seat of the Klagenfurt city administration since 1918. Among the features of this building that are of historic and artistic importance is the ceremonial staircase with its numerous columns. It is said that the nobility even rode up and down these low and broad steps on horseback in former times.
Landhaus
The Regional Assembly Building - the Landhaus - is located between two squares, Alter Platz and Heiligengeistplatz, and is one of the finest non-ecclesiastic buildings in the city. It was built between 1574 and 1594 to replace the demolished moated castle that had earlier occupied the site. The Carinthian parliament meets in this building today. Regular open air events are held in the magnificent arcaded courtyard.
Municipal Theatre
This temple of the muses in Klagenfurt was built in 1908-1910 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Joseph I to designs of the celebrated theatre architect partnership Helmer and Fellner. This magnificent Austrian "Jugendstil" building was renovated in original art nouveau style recently and a modern administration building designed by star architect Günther Domenig was added at the rear.
City Arkaden
The "City Arkaden" shopping centre with its outstanding architectural design was opened in 2006 and is now one of the landmarks of Klagenfurt's city centre. There are 120 fashion, electronic, health care, beauty, sports and food stores on three floors, as well as service providers and places to eat and drink - all under one roof in a pleasant, light-flooded atmosphere. The City Arkaden shopping centre is at the very heart of the city.
The City Parish Church
This baroque gallery church is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the city. An absolute must see here: the ceiling frescoes by Josef Ferdinand Fromiller, the baroque pulpits, the St. Nepomuk Chapel, the Helper in Need Chapel, the grave of French author Julien Green, and the vestry that has been converted into a chapel and designed by the contemporary artist Ernst Fuchs (scenes of the Apocalypse).
Pedestrian zones - Alter Platz, Kramergasse and Wienergasse
There are three important pedestrian zones in the city centre of Klagenfurt. Kramergasse (leading from Neuer Platz to Alter Platz) is the first pedestrian zone created in Austria and was opened in 1961. Wiener Gasse and Alter Platz were soon to follow as car-free zones. The three of them are also the oldest streets of the city. Instead of circling the city in the car, these streets invite local people and visitors to stroll around, to promenade and enjoy some leisurely shopping. Historic facades combines with the modern architecture of boutiques, large and small shops, restaurants and cafés are just as enticing as the restored arcade courtyards and passages. In summer the city centre is alive with open-air parties and in Advent mulled wine is served - Klagenfurt's pedestrian zone is a place to meet and be met .
Cine-City - cinema with bowling arena
Enjoy the unique experience offered by Carinthia's largest multiplex cinema! Following the motto "There's always something on here", the cinema shows the latest films and blockbusters; and since November 2006 it also boasts the most modern bowling centre in the south of Austria: 20 hi-tech alleys, the best video and sound installations, disco-bowling, bar, lounges, Playplanet, billiards, ... Entertainment, sports and fun for the young and the young at heart, for children, teens and the entire family. Bowling is a trend sport and is booming worldwide.
Museum of the Province of Carinthia
In its permanent exhibition, the Museum of the Province of Carinthia shows its collections in the fields of archaeology, art and history, folklore and ethnology, botany, zoology, geology and mineralogy and a fine collection of musical instruments. In addition, various special exhibitions are organised. The museum park includes a lapidarium, a collection of Roman stone monuments.
Robert-Musil Literature Museum
The literature museum in the house where world-famous novelist Robert Musil was born hosts a permanent exhibition on Robert Musil, Christine Lavant and Ingeborg Bachmann, with documents, photos, manuscripts and a library of the work of the three famous writers. The director of the Musil Museum, Dr. Heimo Strempfl, is also the organiser of the Klagenfurt Literature Course for Young Authors that takes place every year before the lectures an discussions for the Ingeborg-Bachmann Literature Award.
Benediktiner Market
The most important marketplace in Klagenfurt is at Benediktinerplatz. On the traditional market days, Thursday and Saturday, farmers and gardeners from all over Carinthia, the neighbouring regions of Friuli (Italy) and Slovenia come to Klagenfurt to offer fresh produce for kitchen, cellar and table. And as in days gone by, Benediktinerplatz square is a centre of communication with a unique atmosphere where people like to meet for a chat and a cup of coffee.
Happ's Reptile House
Austria's largest reptile house, where a variety of snakes and saurians await the visitor. The insect house is fascinating, and there is a large outdoor park with snakes, giant turtles, a petting zoo and dino park.
Planetarium
Modern indoor star-theatre in Klagenfurt. In the planetarium, stars and constellations are projected on the screen in the viewing hall; visitors can enjoy the landing on the moon "live", or accompany a mars robot on its excursion and gain an insight into the planetary systems. Each presentation is an artistic, thrilling film.
Kreuzbergl Observatory
At the highest point on Klagenfurt's local mountain, the Kreuzbergl Observatory is embedded in green surroundings. This old tower has been turned into a modern centre of astronomy, and watching the stars has become a favourite pastime in Klagenfurt.
Maria Loretto
Maria Loretto peninsula is one of the most beautiful places at Lake Wörthersee. In 1652, Johann Andrä Graf von Rosenberg built a spacious summer residence in Italian style on the peninsula. Old engravings and drawings show that there was once an impressive gate between Lake Wörthersee and the Lendkanal. After a fire in 178, only the mansion itself and the chapel were restored. A portal with round arch and coat of arms, together with a well in the garden date back to the first building period. The mansion was owned by the Orsini-Rosenberg family until 2002 when the city of Klagenfurt acquired the property. The restoration of mansion and garden was managed by architect Jana Revedin. The park is open to the public, and a bistro invites visitors to sit down and relax. The rooms of the mansion can be hired for events.
Mageregg Game Reserve
Game reserve with local deer and other animals, located next to a mansion built in 1590. The 100,000 sq.m. game reserve in the park of Renaissance mansion of Mageregg has a fine stock of red deer, fallow deer, mouflons and roe deer.
Minimundus
Around the world in three hours - this is only possible at Minimundus, the "miniature world at Lake Wörthersee". 170 famous buildings from fifty countries have been built here in miniature scale. All of them built from original materials by professional model builders and Higher Technical Colleges. The largest model is St. Peter's Cathedral from Rome, the highest one the CN tower from Toronto. Among the most interesting exhibits are the Sagrada Familia Cathedral from Barcelona and the Space Shuttle that takes off every hour, rising to three metres above ground with a lot of smoke and steam. The well-groomed park is a particularly attractive setting for the models.
