The stadium for the European Championship is brand-new and offers space for 32,000 football supporters.
It was built in only 20 months and officially opened on 7 September with Austria playing Japan, followed by the second match, Switzerland - Japan, on 11 September.
The Wörthersee Stadium is located close to the borders of Carinthia with Friuli-Julia Venetia and Slovenia, on a superb site between the city of Klagenfurt and the banks of lake Wörthersee. Surrounded by meadows and hills, with the Karawanken mountains as a backdrop - there can be no more spectacular location for a new football stadium anywhere.
The Wörthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt stands out from all the other stadiums of EURO 2008
TM with its dramatic architecture. The team of architects wanted to build a compact stadium that would perfectly blend and tie in with the superb lake and Alpine landscape. And they achieved their goal - the stadium has already become the city's new landmark and has been affectionately dubbed the "UFO" by the people of Klagenfurt, who have shown immense commitment to it both during and after construction.
